He Never Lets Us Go

Today in church we learned about Derek Redmond (see video above). Derek competed in the 1992 Olympics, and seemed gaurenteed to win a medal in his race. In an instant, everything he had worked toward came crashing down as his hamstring tore, and he fell to the track in pain. Clearly in agony, the paramedics were ready to come take him away, but it became apparent that Derek wanted to finish the race he had started, as he rose and began to hop toward the finish line. Suddenly a man ran from the audience and onto the track. The race regulators tried to hold him back, but he made his way to Derek. This man was Derek’s father. He put his arm around Derek, held him up in the midst of his brokenness and pain, and step by step walked with his son to the finish-line.

In Joshua 1:5, (repeated in other chapters as well) God tells us “never will I leave you nor forsake you.” The hebrew translation breaks down to “never will I relax my hold on you.” When we give God our hand, He never lets us go. No matter what we have done, or what we are experiencing, He is always right next to us, tightly holding on.

We’ve all probably experienced moments like Derek. Maybe our dreams are crashing down, we’ve lost someone important to us, we are broken and in pain. But through it all God is there. God is like Derek’s father, holding us up and supporting us every step of the way until we cross the finish line- heaven. Never think that there isn’t hope, that you are too far gone, that you are abandoned. God is here, holding you up, never letting you go, walking you step by step until you reach the finish line. It’s time to put aside past failures and disappointments, and get up and go. Do what you can, and God will do the rest. Run the race set out for you, and never forget that your Father is right there with you!
